The Village is governed by a Board of Trustees (also known as "Village Board") which shall be elected at large and consist of a President and six Trustees. Members of the Board shall be elected to serve 4-year terms, shall be the legislative department of the Village, and shall perform such duties and have such powers as provided by law and ordinance. The department is responsible for short and long term planning, reviewing proposed developments, interpreting the zoning ordinance, economic development, building permits and inspection, property maintenance, historic preservation and public art.
The Finance Department coordinates the financial administration of the overall accounting and financial reporting, budgeting, cash management and investing, pensions, and collection functions. The Department is also responsible for providing water and sewer billing customer service and should be contacted regarding water bill inquiries. Payroll and Accounts Payable are both processed within the Finance Department.
The Department provides assistance and guidance to the operating departments and 135+ full-time employees currently on staff including: all recruitments, position classification, salary administration, promotion, performance evaluation, training, benefit administration, discipline, safety and workers compensation, disability, and labor relations. Human Resources is also the coordinating point for risk management, a function which has served to reduce the overall liability exposure of the Village.
The Police Department is charged with protecting the safety and welfare of the public. The majority of the officers are responsible for patrol duties, but others serve as DARE, crime prevention, accident investigators, high school liaison, and investigation officers. Department investigators serve in a general capacity but one investigator and a patrol officer serve as gang specialists. Another officer is assigned to the North Central Narcotics Division as a clandestine operative. Department members serve a number of task forces in the area. Civilian personnel serve a vital role in the support services area, including records processing, telecommunications, and community service.
The Public Works Department provides infrastructure maintenance services for the community and is comprised of several divisions including Administration, General Services, and Water and Sewer Utilities.
The Algonquin Recreation Department is dedicated to providing exceptional recreation, parks, and open spaces to enrich community life.
The Village Manager's Office provides management services, budgeting, legislative support, and communications to elected officials, staff, and the general public in order to carry out the policy direction as set by the Village Board in Algonquin.
