A number of local agencies, private utility companies, and volunteer organizations are currently offering assistance programs to help those who have fallen behind in payments for housing or utilities due to COVID-19 hardships. Please be aware that assistance programs may differ depending on your county of residence. Additional information on available resources can be found below.

Utilities Assistance Resources

ComEd (Electric Utilities)

ComEd's Helping Hand Program offers assistance for customers with the greatest need who have been impacted by the COVID pandemic.  The program is designed to allow customers to access financial assistance, by way of self-identifying and providing income and hardship documentation directly to ComEd.  A one-time grant amount of up to $300 is available.

Eligibility requirements: Household gross income up to 250% of the federal poverty level (FPL) for the 30 days prior to application, and one of the following: unexpected loss of income or reduction in income (including job loss or furlough), sudden illness to you or a family member, or other stated COVID-19 impact.

Any others that are challenged in paying their outstanding ComEd balances are encouraged to visit ComEd.com/CARE, which provides details on the customer support package.

Nicor (Gas Utilities)

One-time grants towards Nicor utilities are available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP is a federally and state funded program that is designed to help households with monetary assistance for energy bills resulting from financial hardship. To learn more about LIHEAP through Nicor, please click here.

Additionally, Nicor's Gas Sharing Program may also aid eligible residential customers with one-time grant payments towards their energy bill. Residential customers interested should contact their local Salvation Army to schedule an appointment to complete the application for this program. Residential customers may receive a Sharing Grant up to $350 or $400 based on the overall account balance on the account depending on eligibility requirements.

Water & Sewer Utilities

The Village Board adopted an ordinance amending the water and sewer utility rate schedule to freeze the annual rate increase effective November 2020 through November 2021 amid the current public health crisis. If your household is currently experiencing financial hardship that is impacting your ability to pay your water and sewer utility bill, the following list of resources may be able to assist you.

Please keep in mind that other local organizations, such as churches and other volunteer organizations, may also be able to provide assistance and we encourage residents to seek these opportunities as needed.
