Algonquin Pool to Remain Closed for 2020 Season

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Village of Algonquin will be keeping Lions-Armstrong Memorial Pool closed for the 2020 swim season.  While this decision to keep this facility closed was not taken lightly, the Village feels that this is the right decision to ensure the safety and well-being of the community, visitors, and staff as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold.

Although recent Centers for Disease Control guidance notes that pools could begin to operate, it qualified that guidance by noting that pools would still need to comply with social distancing, size limitations, and additional cleaning/disinfecting guidelines.

Moreover, the Illinois Department of Public Health has made no indication about how it will begin conducting pool inspections or provided any timelines in which the inspections may occur.

The combination of these considerations, along with the uncertainty of the length of the current stay-at-home order and likely restrictions on group activity this summer even if the stay-at-home restrictions are eased, led the Village to the disappointing conclusion that we cannot safely open the Lions-Armstrong Memorial Pool to the community this summer.

“As disappointing as this news may be, it is the right decision for the health and safety of our staff and visitors as we cope with this unprecedented pandemic,” stated Village President John Schmitt.

The Village continues to monitor information from local, state, and national authorities as it relates to our Recreation programming.  For further information, please visit www.algonquin.org/recreation
