Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing | Janak & Weck Subdivisions
The Village of Algonquin, with assistance from RJN Group, Inc., will be evaluating the performance of the Village's sanitary sewer system through smoke testing in the Janak and Weck subdivisions, generally covering the area south of Algonquin Road (IL Route 62) and west of Sandbloom Road. The evaluation is being performed as part of preliminary engineering for future water, sewer, and roadway improvements in these neighborhoods.
About Smoke Testing
Smoke testing helps identify locations where stormwater may be entering the sanitary sewer system. During testing, crews will introduce non-toxic smoke into the sanitary sewer system through manholes. The smoke travels through the sewer system and may become visible through openings such as roof vents, drains, cracks, or other connections, helping crews identify potential defects or improper connections.
The smoke used during testing is non-toxic, low odor, creates no fire hazard, leaves no residue, and dissipates quickly. Smoke should not enter homes or businesses unless there is a dried-out drain trap or a defect in the building's plumbing.
Testing Schedule & Notifications
Testing is scheduled to begin Monday, October 12, and is expected to be completed during that week, weather permitting. Residents and businesses within the testing area will be notified in advance by the Village and RJN Group, Inc. Door hangers will be distributed prior to testing, and signs will be posted while crews are working in the area. RJN Group staff will also be available to answer questions about the testing process.
