Project Overview

The Village of Algonquin has been awarded $123,000 through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of Compton Drive and Lake Gillilan Way. This location serves Algonquin Lakes Elementary School and provides access to Algonquin Lakes Park.

Why this Project is Needed

The intersection experiences significant pedestrian activity year-round due to its proximity to Algonquin Lakes Elementary School and Algonquin Lakes Park. The project also addresses longstanding concerns about vehicle speeds along Compton Drive, visibility, and the safety of pedestrian crossings near the school.

Scope of Work

Proposed improvements include:

·         ADA-compliant pedestrian crossings

·         Pedestrian refuge island at the west leg of the intersection

·         Added signage for advanced notification and visibility

·         High-visibility pavement marking upgrades

·         Traffic-calming measures

·         Coordination with Algonquin Lakes Elementary School and district 300 staff.

Anticipated Timeline

·         Design Engineering: 2026

·         IDOT Letting: Early 2027

·         Anticipated Construction Start: June 2027

·         Construction Timing: Planned while Algonquin Lakes Elementary School is out of session to reduce impacts to school operations

Impact During Construction

Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2027. The Village will work to minimize impacts to school operations, pedestrian access, and nearby traffic. Additional information regarding construction impacts, detours, and schedule updates will be provided as the project advances.
