Algonquin Named Tree City USA for 30th Consecutive Year
The Village of Algonquin has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking its 30th consecutive year receiving the designation and its fifth consecutive year earning the Tree City USA Growth Award. These recognitions reflect Algonquin’s continued commitment to preserving and enhancing its natural environment.
The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, recognizes communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to effective urban forest management. To qualify, communities must maintain a tree board or department, enact a tree care ordinance, invest at least $2 per capita in urban forestry, and observe Arbor Day annually.
Throughout 2025, the Village’s Public Works Department managed and maintained more than 23,100 trees on public property through a combination of in-house and contracted services. During the year, staff removed 317 diseased or declining trees and planted 419 new trees, resulting in a net gain of 102 trees communitywide. Additionally, 4,999 trees were trimmed as part of the Village’s annual pruning program.
“Thirty consecutive years as a Tree City USA community is an achievement our Village is incredibly proud of,” said Village President Debby Sosine. “This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural character of Algonquin.”
