Planning Begins for High Hill Park & Nature Preserve in Algonquin
The Village of Algonquin is developing a comprehensive master plan for High Hill Park & Nature Preserve (501 Kirkland Drive) and is inviting the community to share feedback to help guide the park’s future. The plan will serve as a long-term roadmap for park design, land use, facility improvements, programming, environmental conservation, and community engagement.
High Hill Park & Nature Preserve spans approximately 29 acres and is divided into two sections, with 8 acres of active park space and over 21 acres of naturalized areas. The southern portion, located on Harnish Drive between Providence Drive and Roaring Brook Lane, features a playground, shelter, swings, and a sand area. The northern section, accessible from Kirkland Drive, includes an open field for team sports and a walking path. A path connects the two areas through a nature preserve with a lake and stream, along with scenic views from the top of the park.
Originally developed in 1995 with assistance from a Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the park remains a valued community asset. The Village intends to pursue similar grant funding of up to $600,000 to support future improvements identified through the master planning process.
In recent years, the Village has advanced the 2021 Parks & Recreation Master Plan through improvements at Holder Memorial Park, James B. Wood Park, Presidential Park, Towne Park, and Tunbridge Park, reflecting continued investment in Algonquin’s park system.
“This master plan reflects our continued investment in Algonquin’s park system and in the spaces that bring our community together,” said Village President Debby Sosine. “We encourage residents to share their ideas as we plan for the future of High Hill Park.”
The planning effort is anticipated to align with the nearby sanitary sewer relocation project along Ratt Creek and future restoration efforts along portions of the corridor. Construction is anticipated between 2027 and 2028, weather permitting, supporting a coordinated approach to improvements in the area. Residents are encouraged to complete the community survey to help inform initial concept plans.
The survey will remain open through April 24, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Learn more and take the survey: https://www.algonquin.org/HighHillPark
