Winter Salt Storage Permit Application Checklist

Submittal Requirements:
  • Building Permit Application
  • A Site Plan including the following:
    • Salt storage must be a minimum distance of 100 feet away from a storm sewer drain.
    • Salt storage must be located in an area that minimizes visual impact on public ways and/or adjacent residential uses
Permit Fees (Fee is not due until the permit is ready):
  • $85.00
Construction Requirements & Information:
  • Permit is required for all salt piles to be stored outside.
  • Permit is valid for the entire winter season (November-April).
  • The maximum amount of storage allowed is to cover four storm events. The amount to be stored shall be listed on the permit application. 
  • The salt within the salt storage location shall be covered with a water-resistant tarp or similar protective cover, which shall be adequately secured to prevent wind and/or water damage at all times.
  • Salt storage must be at least 100 feet from a storm sewer drain. The Site Plan must show this distance as part of the Permit Application.
  • Salt storage must be located uphill and away from the snow piles.
  • Salt storage must be located in an area that minimizes visual impact on the public way and/or adjacent residential uses. The Site Plan must show this distance as part of the Permit Application.
  • The salt storage area and the area used for truck loading and unloading shall be diligently swept and maintained free of loose salt and debris at all times. The area shall be kept clean and workmanlike at all times. 
  • All unused salt and the site shall be cleaned up no later than April 15.
