How Can You Help Prevent Stormwater Pollution?

Stormwater is precipitation that has runoff roofs, lawns, and other surfaces and is carried away to local watersheds through a system of pipes, culverts, or ditches. Along the way, stormwater collects particles such as dirt, chemicals, and other pollutants before it enters the watershed, which can lower watershed water quality and impact drinking water sources.

Here are some tips to help you reduce or prevent stormwater pollution:

Lawn Care & Maintenance

  • Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly;
  • Plant native and drought resistant plants;
  • Compost or find ways to recycle yard waste;
  • Cover piles of dirt and mulch to prevent them from washing into stormwater systems;
  • Sweep up yard debris like leaves and lawn clippings instead of hosing them off;
  • Plant grass or vegetation where soil is exposed to prevent erosion.

Solid Waste & Litter

  • Discard cigarette butts and other solid waste or litter appropriately;
  • Pick up litter when you see it, if you can;
  • Pick up and properly dispose of construction debris like concrete dust, saw dust, and brick mortar.

Hazardous Waste & Solvents

  • Use hazardous substances (paints, solvents, cleaners, etc.) in the smallest amounts possible;
  • Store hazardous substances properly and in accordance with the directions on the label;
  • Clean water-based painting supplies over soil;
  • Filter and reuse solvents like paint thinner, when possible;
  • Dispose of hazardous waste during events like household hazardous waste collection programs;
  • Clean up spills as quick as possible, responsibly;
  • Dispose of all hazardous waste as indicated on the printed label.
