Algonquin McHenry County Public Works Yard Improvements
Project Overview
The Village of Algonquin and the McHenry County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) have partnered to construct shared maintenance improvements at the Village’s Public Works Facility located at 110 Mitchard Way.
The joint project includes the construction of a new 12,000-ton-capacity salt storage structure and conveyor system, a liquid de-icing storage and containment area (tank containment system), new covered material storage bins, and site improvements. Site improvements include pavement resurfacing, pavement expansion to improve truck loading operations, improved internal traffic circulation, and drainage enhancements.
This partnership enhances winter maintenance operations for both agencies while maximizing the use of the existing Public Works property.
Why this Project is Needed
The Village and County both maintain roadways in and around Algonquin. Approximately 40% of County-plowed roads are located in the southern portion of McHenry County, including Algonquin.
Currently, County trucks must travel to Woodstock to refill salt during winter events. Constructing shared salt and liquid de-icing storage at the Algonquin facility will:
- Reduce travel time for refilling operations
- Improve plowing efficiency on County routes in and near Algonquin
- Return trucks to service more quickly during snow and ice events
- Improve overall winter response for residents, commuters, and visitors
The improvements will also modernize aging site infrastructure, improve circulation within the maintenance yard, and provide more efficient material storage and handling operations.
Scope of Work
Major components of the project include:
- Construction of a new 12,000-ton salt storage structure with a conveyor system
- Installation of a centralized liquid de-icing storage and containment system
- New covered material storage bins
- Pavement resurfacing and expansion to improve truck loading and site circulation
- Drainage improvements within the Public Works yard
All improvements will occur within the existing Public Works property at 110 Mitchard Way.
Anticipated Timeline
- Late April 2026: Construction anticipated to begin
- November 2026: Substantial completion expected
This schedule is subject to change based on weather, material availability, and field conditions.
Impact During Construction
Construction will take place within the secured Public Works Facility at 110 Mitchard Way.
There will be no anticipated impacts to residential streets or public roadways, aside from construction vehicles entering and exiting Mitchard Way. The project will be phased to allow continued use of the facility during construction
Residents may notice periodic truck traffic associated with construction activities.
