Algonquin Named Tree City USA for 29th Consecutive Year

The Village of Algonquin has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking its 29th consecutive year receiving this designation and its fourth consecutive year earning the Tree City USA Growth Award. These recognitions reflect Algonquin’s ongoing commitment to sound urban forest management and the preservation of natural resources.

The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, sets four core standards for recognition: maintaining a tree board or department, enacting a tree care ordinance, allocating at least $2 per capita to urban forestry, and observing Arbor Day. Algonquin continues to exceed these requirements through dedicated investment and long-term planning.

The Village’s Public Works Department oversaw the maintenance and management of more than 22,500 trees on public property through both in-house and contracted efforts during 2024. Over the course of the year, staff removed 262 diseased or dying trees and planted 342 new ones, resulting in a net gain of 80 trees for the community. As part of the annual tree pruning program, 4,580 trees were trimmed.

To celebrate Arbor Day and promote environmental education, Public Works staff visited Eastview Elementary School, where they shared information about the role of trees in maintaining a healthy community. The visit concluded with a ceremonial tree planting on the school’s playground with students.

“We are honored to receive this continued recognition through the Tree City USA and Growth Award programs,” said Village President Debby Sosine. “These recognitions are a reflection of the Village’s dedication to protecting natural resources and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.”

In 2024, Illinois tied for first in the nation for the number of communities receiving the Tree City USA Growth Award, reflecting the state’s leadership in promoting effective urban forest practices.
