National Night Out 2009
National Night Out is the culmination of a year-long community building campaign that is designed to do the following:
  • Heighten crime prevention awareness
  • Generate support and participation for local anticrime programs
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The first National Night Out was introduced early in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, with the event typically held on the first Tuesday in August.  That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in 1984. In subsequent years, National Night Out participation has grown considerably.  National Night Out 2007 involved 35.4 million people in 11,310 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2009 is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, 2009 between the hours of 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

Bring your family and meet your neighbors and local law enforcement at the 2009 National Night Out event held on Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Algonquin Swimming Pool and Splashpad (599 Longwood Drive). The night is to include FREE swimming, food, games, and prizes. Donations of new toys or school supplies are encouraged. These items will be donated to Algonquin charities assisting area youth who are in financial need. This year's event will focus on educating participants about organizing their own neighborhood National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 4, 2009.

Please check the Village of Algonquin website in mid-June for more information on how to organize your own National Night Out event.  In the meantime, you may contact the Algonquin Police Department at 847-658-4531 for more information on National Night Out 2009.
