You are invited to the 10th annual
Conservation Community Day
"Leave No Child Inside"
Friday, June 15
11:00am-2:00pm
Woods Creek Path
(between Bunker Hill Drive south to Woods Creek Lane)
Parking is available on Bunker Hill Drive, Woods Creek Lane, Brookside Avenue, or at the Harnish Drive Library.
The event, which is free to the public, aims to educate and inform people about the environment, how natural resources are being protected in their community, and what local residents can do to conserve resources and protect the environment.
This year will focus on the Chicago Wilderness initiative of "Leave No Child Inside." Kids today build internet sites instead of constructing forts in the woods. Music piped into earphones has replaced listening for the sounds of bird calls and frog croaks. Cell phones and e-mails are more efficient than two cups on a string or flashlight signals. Childhood has changed. A growing body of research is telling us that time spent outdoors in nature is critical to children's physical, social and emotional development. Unstructured time in nature fosters creativity, emotional well-being, independent learning and problem solving; it lets kids connect with the place in which they live and the larger environment on which we all depend. Chicago Wilderness members share a common dream: that the children of this region will grow up with a strong connection to nature, and, as a result, are healthier and motivated to become its caring stewards.
Join us for a fun filled day and learn what you can do to lessen the impact to preserve and protect our natural resources. Free materials will be distributed to the public and children will have the opportunity to make crafts from recycled items. The following groups have committed to have displays at the event (more will be added soon):
Dundee Township Open Space Program
Applied Ecological Services (Woods Creek Watershed Plan)
Village of Algonquin ECO Committee
Land Keepers
Natural Areas Volunteers
The Land Conservancy of McHenry County
Village of Algonquin Utilities Division
Village of Algonquin Parks and Forestry Division
