Algonquin Named Tree City USA
The Arbor Day Foundation announced that the Village of Algonquin is again named a Tree City USA community for its commitment to effective forest management. This is the 21st year in which Algonquin has received this designation.
“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,” said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
“Trees provide many aesthetic, health and environmental benefits - all which contribute to the quality of life in Algonquin,” stated John Schmitt, Village President. “This honor recognizes our accomplishments as responsible stewards of the environment.”
Algonquin has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2.00 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
