Mosquito Control

The Village of Algonquin has contracted with Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management, Inc. to administer an EarthRight integrated mosquito control program.

Algonquin’s control program will have four phases:

  1. Surveillance and Testing
  2. Larval Control
  3. Adult Control
  4. Community Education.

This program closely follows the recommendations for the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and uses products registered with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Surveillance and testing involves mapping prominent mosquito breeding habitats in the Village and placing several traps to monitor mosquito populations. These traps yield qualitative and quantitative information about mosquito species, populations, and whether they are carriers of West Nile Virus.

Larval control involves introducing bacterial agents in to standing water such as retention ponds, storm drains, and other breeding areas. These agents prevent the developing mosquito larvae from becoming adults.

Adult control involves distributing a very small amount of an Organic Materials Review Institute listed product in a dispersible cloud of fine droplets. This is done after sunset when mosquitos are most active. The product is disseminated via trucks with an electric sprayer. This part of Algonquin’s program will only be performed as needed. It is the goal of the program to limit early populations so that adult control is generally unnecessary. Weather and timing play an important role in whether adult control becomes necessary.

Community education is a key part of mosquito control. Residents should remove water in bird baths, baby pools, or other manageable standing water areas every two to three days to prevent mosquito larva form developing. Gutters should be checked to insure that they are not retaining water. Residents are also advised to avoid heading outdoors at dusk, and to wear long shirts, long pants, and a DEET-based mosquito repellent.
