Refuse & Recycling - Groot

Village of Algonquin refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection services are contracted with Groot. Residents having a refuse, recycling, or yard waste issue should first call Groot 800-244-1977.  If the issue is not resolved residents should then contact the Village online or by phone at 847-658-2700.


Refuse and Recycling Collection

  • Containers:  Bags or containers should not exceed 32 gallons in size and 50 pounds in weight. One (1) prepaid sticker must be attached to each bag or container set out for collection. Please do not exceed the 50 pound weight for cans or bags.
  • Large Items:  Large household items such as: discarded furniture, beds, tables, etc. will be collected on your regular collection day. Items under 50 pounds will require one (1) prepaid sticker attached to each item. Large household items over 50 but less than 75 pounds requires two (2) prepaid stickers attached to each item. Items that cannot be safely lifted by the driver, regardless of weight, may require a special collection; contact Groot Customer Service at 800-244-1977 (During the Spring Cleanup - dates to be announced each year - no stickers will be required).
  • Remodeling Debris:  Other items such as carpeting, lumber, gutters, paneling, etc. should be cut into 4 - foot lengths and the pieces tied together. Bundles cannot exceed 50 pounds, and one (1) sticker must be attached to each bundle. For large amounts of debris, please contact Groot 48 hours prior to collection at 800-244-1977 for an estimate.
  • Appliances:  State law prohibits the disposal of appliances in landfills. "White goods" containing CFC gas require a special scheduled pickup. Call Groot Customer Service at 800-244-1977 to arrange for collection and billing. This includes refrigerators, freezers, ranges, washer/dryers, water heaters, air conditioners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and other similar domestic and commercial large appliances. The cost is $30 per item. 
  • Heavy Objects: Large, heavy automotive parts, concrete gravel, dirt or similar materials will NOT be collected.  Please contact Groot Customer Service to schedule a special pickup of your electronics (i.e. televisions, computers, printers) and white goods (refrigerator, stoves, washers, etc.) these items will NOT be collected during the weekly curbside collection.
  • Toxic Products:  Automotive batteries, paint products, insecticides, oils, anti-freeze, etc. will NOT be collected. For tips on where to dispose of these and other household chemicals, contact the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency at 217-785-8604.

Service Rates
Algonquin has a volume-based refuse rates system called "pay-as-you-throw" that provides economic rewards for reducing waste. Residents are charged for the amount of trash they generate in the same way we get billed for the amount of electricity, gas and other utilities that we use. That means "the less you throw away, the less you pay."  Stickers are available at various local businesses throughout the Algonquin area and are listed online, and can also be purchased in bulk from the Groot web site.  The following are the rates effective September 2017 for solid waste services in Algonquin:

Collection Schedule
Algonquin is divided into two zones in which refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection takes place on the same collection day. The Groot collection schedule is available online.  All containers must be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.  The following is the holiday schedule for 2017:

Note:  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day do not affect the Groot collection schedule. 


Yard Waste Collection

  • Grass:  Grass clippings must be placed in 32-gallon garbage cans or 30-gallon paper yard waste bags with one (1) prepaid sticker attached to each bag or can. Yard waste will not be accepted in plastic bags. When using a rigid container, place a large red "X" on both sides of the container to identify it as your yard waste container. Container cannot exceed 50 pounds. 
    Brush & Branches:  Brush and branches must be bundled with twine (wire or plastic is not acceptable) not to exceed 4 feet in length or 2 feet in diameter. One prepaid sticker must be attached to each bundle.
  • Sod:  Sod is collected as refuse and should be placed in a garbage bag or trash can not to exceed 50 pounds. One (1) prepaid sticker is required on each bag or can of sod. Floral arrangements and household plants are also considered trash.
  • Christmas Trees:  Christmas trees discarded for collection will be collected at no charge during designated times. Cut tree in half if over 6 feet; remove all tinsel and decorations; do not bag tree; and uncover if buried by snow.

Please note that Groot provides free leaf and brush collection during the spring and fall of each year.  Details on this collection are delivered to Algonquin households in advance of the free collection dates and is also available online.
