Transform Illinois Honors Algonquin with Local Transformer Award
Transform Illinois, a statewide collaborative of elected officials and civic and research organizations dedicated to supporting more efficient local governments, announced its second annual Transformer Awards, which recognize State, Local and Citizen Transformers whose efforts exemplify the coalition’s mission. The 2016 Transformers received their awards at a public event on October 5 at the Metropolitan Planning Council in Chicago.
Algonquin received the 2016 Local Transformer Award for its creative use of innovative intergovernmental agreements with neighbors to deliver better services to residents.
“Our goal is to provide better services without increases in taxes or reductions of other governmental services” said Village President John Schmitt. “It is with this is mind that we began looking at intergovernmental agreements with our neighbors.”
As a cost-containment strategy to address budget shortages during the Great Recession, the Village of Algonquin began insourcing building inspection, fleet maintenance, and information technology services utilizing existing resources. By embracing a business-like mentality of providing services to its customers, village leaders quickly identified several new ways to be more efficient available resources, including sharing staff and pooling resources with neighboring communities to create more effective operations.
“The shared services model has allowed the Village and its partners the flexibility and cost-containment necessary to reduce budgets but still deliver effective services” said Schmitt.
The services Algonquin partners with other entities to deliver grown in recent years to include fleet maintenance, geographic information systems, information technology, building inspection, code enforcement, plan review, public safety, recreation programming, school safety, snow plowing, and purchasing.
Others recognized by Transform Illinois include Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon), and the Century Hill Street Lighting District.
