Potable water for consumption by Village residents is supplied by the Utilities Division. The water is drawn from nine wells located within the Village. There are a total of 160 miles of water lines and a total of 134 miles of sanitary sewer lines maintained by the Village.

In addition, the Utilities Division maintains four water towers and three standpipes within the Village for a total storage capacity of 3,550,000.

It is the Water Treatment Division's charge to provide our community a safe and reliable supply of water. |
- The water treatment division manages potable drinking water production, water meters, wells, booster stations and water storage facilities. Rated production capacity is approximately 8 million gallons per day.

Install and maintain the metering system to provide accurate information of water consumption for billing and historical use.

Manage a backflow program to ensure that no contaminants are introduce into the potable water system by backflow or back siphonage.

Construction has begun on the three million gallon per day micro-membrane water treatment facility.

Water/Utilities Division - Underground Utilities
Responsibilities & Goals

Identify and eliminate sources of I/I in our sanitary sewer system through the assistance of consultants, investigation, monitoring and maintenance programs.

Identify and eliminate sources or water loss through water leak detection program and diligent system maintenance.

Maintenance of valves, hydrants, manholes, services and other components that assure a safe and reliable sewer and water system to all our consumers.

Ensure all fire hydrants are operational to provide and enhance our fire protection system.

Maintain the sanitary sewer lift stations in a fashion the will ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation and service.

Higher level of maintenance will aide in the reduction of costly overtime due to unscheduled failures of the system.

Perform J.U.L.I.E. locates for Village owned water and sewer amenities to other entities wishing to drill or dig in the city limits of the Village.

Maintenance and repair of B-Boxes (buffalo boxes) for city water service

Sanitary System
The Utilities Division also operates the Village's sanitary system. The Algonquin Wastewater Treatment Facility has a rated capacity of 3,000,000 million gallons per day and treats, on average, 2,500,000 gallons per day.
There are a total of ten sanitary sewer lift stations and a total of 134 miles of sanitary sewer mains maintained by the Village.
Water/Utilities Division - Waste Water Treatment Facility
Algonquin has one Waste Water Treatment Facility that is currently processing 2.8 million gallons of waste water a day. We are currently in the process of starting renovation and expansion of our plant which will be completed in April 2006 and will process 4 million gallons of treated water a day when completed.

Waste Water Treatment Goals:

Recently completed renovation to the wastewater facility (Phase 5 Expansion).

Replaced our belt filter press, which is used to dewater sewage sludge reducing the moisture content.

Developing plans for future phases to expand the hydraulic and organic loading capacity of the wastewater facility (Phases 6 - 8).

Development of the Industrial Pretreatment Program. The program will monitor industrial and specific commercial users to ensure quality effluent and reduce upset of our wastewater stream.

Development of a Fats/Oils/Grease reduction program. The program will aide in reducing sanitary sewer blockages, protection of pumping equipment and protect the environment.
