The primary function of the Criminal Investigations Division is to identify and apprehend the persons responsible for the commission of criminal acts within the Village. This is accomplished through both proactive and reactive investigative measures. Typically, the Investigation Division does not become involved in a criminal case until after a uniformed officer receives a call, which is usually from the victim, and the officer writes a report, and forwards that report to the Investigations Division. Some of the criteria used to determine which cases will qualify for assignment to a detective include having known suspect information, eyewitness statements, suspect vehicle information, physical evidence (such as fingerprints, tool marks, or other similar items), unusual methods of operation, and crime patterns.
The Investigations Division also participates in several multi-jurisdiction investigative units including the North Central Narcotics Task Force, Major Investigations Assistance Team, and the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. In addition to criminal investigations the division also conducts background investigations pertaining to persons who have applied for various Village licenses, as well as for prospective Village employees. In the course of a year, the Investigations Division will review more than 1,200 incidents and will conduct about 125 background investigations.
The Algonquin Police Department makes efforts to aggressively suppress crime in the community through effective and professional police procedures. In order to accomplish this goal, we need every citizen's assistance. If you can provide information regarding criminal activity, please contact the Criminal Investigations Division, Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. |
